6th Grade Band Tops at Festival

4/29/2016

Picture
The 6th Grade Beginning Band performed this Friday, April 29 at a Band Festival held at Bonnabel High School in Kenner.  The festival rates each song the band performs on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 or "Superior" being the highest rating.  The band received top "Superior" ratings on each piece and even received a "Superior Plus" on the piece "Ancient Hunters"!

The festival was held in honor of the founder and coordinator of the Archdiocesan Band Program and Festival for nearly 40 years, Sister Mary Hilary, who passed away in February.  She lived her mission of bringing band into the lives of young students through the Archdiocesan Band Program and her Festivals.  Her work has shaped the lives of hundreds of students in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area.

Congratulations to our Beginning Band!  This performance wraps up a very busy festival season in which all of the Mustang Bands have come home with top ratings!  Thanks to the outstanding support of our parents who came out to hear the performance and chaperone today.  Special thanks to Mrs. Hills, Mr. Muse, and the faculty and staff at CMS for their support of the band program!

You are invited to come out and hear these outstanding bands at our annual Spring Concert, held May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the CMS Gym.

Solo & Ensemble Festival

4/26/2016

The L.M.E.A. Solo and Ensemble Festival is an opportunity for our young musicians to play a solo or duet for assessment.  Students receive a rating of 1 to 5, with 1 or “Superior” being the highest rating.  Students receiving a 1 will also be presented with a medal at the Spring Concert on May 18.  Having this accolade is a great resume builder and helps the student in the future when applying for the L.B.A. State Honor Band!  Students have picked a solo and/or duet to play and have been working on them in class.  Students can be shy about playing a solo, but the experience is invaluable for a musician, so we encourage all students to sign up!

The Solo and Ensemble Festival costs $5.00 per person/per event (i.e., a student playing a solo AND duet would pay $10.00).  We turn this fee into L.M.E.A. who sanctions the event, hires the judge and provides the medals.

The festival is tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 13 during elective block, but may expand to two days if enough students sign up.  If your child would like to participate, please return the bottom half of this paper with the appropriate fee, due by Friday, May 6.

1's on Stage, 2 in Sightreading at State!

4/22/2016

Congratulations to the 7th & 8th Grade Band on their performance this Thursday at the LMEA State Large Ensemble Festival and Assessment in Hahnville, LA.  They received the highest rating of a 1 or "Superior" in Concert from all three stage judges.  One judge even commented that their version of Serengeti Dreams was the best he had heard in his career!  In Sight-Reading, where the band must play a piece of music that they have never played before, the band received a 2 or "Excellent" Rating.

Receiving a Superior Concert rating on stage at State Festival is a first for Central Middle School!  Congratulations Mustangs!

The Mustang Band would like to thank Mrs. Hills, Mr. Muse, and the entire CMS family for rallying behind them for this historic performance!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The 6th Grade Band will perform at Band Festival on Friday, April 29th at Bonnabel High School (2801 Bruin Dr., Kenner, LA).  The festival is an opportunity for the band to perform in front of a music judge and to receive assessment and feedback.  Bands that do exceptionally well can receive the highest rating of a “1” or “Superior”.  The students have been working extremely hard to prepare for this event and we are looking forward to a great performance and field trip.

Students will rehearse all together during their elective block starting on April 25th.  It is very important that students remember to bring their instruments on these days!

7:10 a.m. – Students report to advisory
7:45 a.m. – Students report to the band room/warm-up/pack and load instruments

There is no cost for this field trip, it has been covered by the fundraised monies from the World’s Finest Chocolate fundraiser.  Adventure Quest will include pizza, laser tag, bumper cars, mini golf, and an adventure maze.  If students would like extra coins for the arcade or extra snacks, they will need to bring money for that.

Please indicate on the permission form if you are available to chaperone or if you are available to pull the equipment trailer.
